Making Security Measurable: Why "We Haven't Had a Breach" Isn't Proof

"We haven't had a breach."

"We have antivirus and firewalls."

"Our IT team says we're fine."

These sound reassuring. They're not evidence.

In cybersecurity, the absence of failure isn't proof of success. If you can't measure it, you can't manage it. And if you can't manage it, you can't improve it.

This month, we're looking at one of the most overlooked parts of a security program: metrics, reporting, and progress tracking.

Why measurement matters

Your Information Technology Security Program needs more than policies and controls. It needs a way to answer one question: is this actually working?

A measurable program helps you:

1. Identify what's improving — and what isn't.

2. Justify budget and resource decisions.

3. Build trust with leadership, partners, and regulators.

4. Stay accountable across your organization.

Think of it like running a business without ever looking at the P&L. You might feel like things are fine. But "feels fine" isn't a financial statement, and it isn't a security posture either.

Security should be a business discipline, not a black box.

This week's takeaway: "No news" isn't a metric. If you can't point to a number, you don't actually know how your program is doing — you're guessing.
