How Often Should You Actually Schedule a Security Audit?

By now you know why third-party audits matter and what your options are. So — how often do you actually need one?

For most businesses, every 1–2 years is a reasonable rhythm. That's frequent enough to catch drift before it becomes a real problem, without turning your team's calendar into a permanent audit cycle.

That said, a few events should move your timeline up:

1. A cloud migration or major infrastructure change.

2. New vendors or partners with access to your systems or data.

3. New regulations that apply to your industry.

If any of those sound familiar, don't wait for the two-year mark.

Where to start, if you haven't done this before:

Don't jump straight to a full penetration test. Start with a simple external vulnerability scan — it's lower cost, faster to run, and gives you a baseline. From there, build toward deeper assessments as your program matures.

It's the same logic as training for a race. You don't start with the marathon. You start by finding out how far you can currently run.

This week's takeaway: The right cadence isn't one-size-fits-all, but "never" is never the right answer.
