5 Types of Third-Party Security Assessments (And What Each One Actually Tells You)

Last week we made the case for bringing in outside eyes on your security program. This week, let's get specific: what does that actually look like?

Not every business needs every type of assessment. It depends on your risk profile, your budget, and what your industry requires. Here are the five most common ones, in plain English:

1. Risk Assessment — A full review of your business risks from an outsider's perspective. This is often where people find out about problems they didn't know they had, simply because someone without your daily blind spots was looking.

2. Vulnerability Scan — Automated tools check your systems, networks, and applications for known weaknesses. Can be run internally, externally, or both.

3. Penetration Test — A simulated attack, run by an ethical hacker, to see how your defenses actually hold up under pressure. Not theoretical. Real attempts to get in.

4. Compliance Audit — Required in certain industries (HIPAA, PCI, and others). This confirms you're actually meeting the standards you're supposed to meet, not just assuming you are.

5. IT Operations Audit — A general health check on your IT department or provider, confirming they're following best practices, not just keeping the lights on.

None of these replace the others. They answer different questions. A vulnerability scan tells you what's exposed. A penetration test tells you what happens if someone finds it. A compliance audit tells you whether you'd survive a regulator's visit.

This week's takeaway: Don't ask "should we get audited?" Ask "which of these five questions do we actually need answered right now?"
